German lunch/dinner (3:30PM), with German Beer, brewed right there in the Colonies.
traveled up and down the creek. These plaques tell about it. I think you can read them. We found the ingenuity and work ethic of these people truly admirable! Especially considering the winters they endured! And below is a picture of the cute stream, and the mill.

One of the first places we stopped was the bakery, for German Pastry and coffee. Later we visited the winery for a wine tasting. And below is Dick standing outside the brewery, where they actually brew good tasting beer, as opposed to the strange stuff you find in some of our small local breweries in towns around the USA. The young lady (nearly all the people who helped us were young folks, who were very knowledgable and friendly and smiling) who helped Dick in his beer selection REALLY KNEW HER BEER!! She could answer any question he gave her, and could even compare the beers he asked her about to better known beers. Each patron was allowed 2 'sample tastes'. So my ingenious husband asked her if he could have his share, and my share too. She readily agreed, and Dick tasted, and then selected a beer he liked best, and bought a 6-pack. We then bought a glass of beer each (it was noon by then, so it

was OK : -)..... and sat out in the beirgarten and enjoyed the beautiful flowers. And the beer....

And after our German dinner, we drove around through some of the villages. They're just a couple of miles apart. And then came back to camp to pack up, and get ready to head east the next day. As we were driving the next day, I pulled out Sam's file, which we brought with us in case customs on the Canadian border wanted to see anything in it. I knew I had the info from the Kennel where we bought her, and that the kennel was in Iowa. And I was curious exactly where she was from. And turns out she's from Amana! I wish we'd known. We'd have gone by and seen where Sam was born, and spent the first 4 1/2 months of her life!
